Steve, Pete & John Davis – brothers, mates
& damn good blokes!

Davis Brothers
Born at the Mater Hospital in Newcastle the Davis boys spent their formative years living in Rowan Crescent. They were close and stuck together, even formed their own gang called “The Green Gumnut Gang” with a mission to uphold law and order in their neighbourhood.

All attending Newcastle Boys High, Steve then headed into Insurance, Pete to Teachers College and John to University to study Law.

Their love of sport, fishing, the beach and socialising with their mates largely kept them out of trouble and enjoying the good life. They were obviously doing something right winning the affections of stunning young ladies Lynn, Judy and Sandy and later went on to have beautiful families.

These days the brothers all live within one hundred metres of each other, and are closer than ever, and whilst the Gumnut Gang Days are over, they still have a little gang that can be found sharing a yarn at the Beaches, the bowlo and especially the Greens. The Davis boys are part of the Greens DNA having been around the club for decades, played and volunteered countless hours, and of course John is the current club President.

Recently I asked the trio a few questions to try and draw out some childhood stories and their love of the Greens.

1. Who was your parent’s favourite?
John – Definitely Steve as the first born, he got all the attention and could do no wrong. He would have another view.
Steve – Definitely Pete & John
Pete – I was obviously the favourite!!

2. Who was the best rugby player?
Pete – I don’t know who was the best, you would have to ask John and Steve, but I was definitely the worst.
John – That would have been an interesting question to discuss 50 years ago but today who cares, it seems pretty irrelevant now. We were each in the normal range of club rugby players, nothing special just loved to play.
Steve – John by a mile – Pete & I were there to make up the numbers

3. How did Jinxy get his nickname?
John – It was on a Merewether Surf Club trip to a North Coast carnival as best I can recall. At some point he sat on the engine cover of the bus and the bus just stopped and the name stuck. That was just one event, truth is that over the years he did break lots of things including bits of himself.
Steve – During a trip away Pete was being a “super pest” with a water pistol & was made to move up to the front of the bus so that everyone could see him. He sat on the engine cover & within 5 minutes the bus broke down & he became “the Jinx” at that moment!

According to good mate Col Dixon, Jinxy had quite the reputation of causing havoc and the nickname ‘Jinx’ was solidified by many and varied mishaps and the path of destruction he left behind.

4. Who was the best looking / most popular in high school?
Steve – Obviously not me! (Bit harsh on yourself there Steveo)
Pete – Judy says me, but Lynn and Sandy wouldn’t agree.
John – I spent a lot of time getting pestered by girls asking questions about my big brothers. I couldn’t see it but apparently they were pretty cool.

5. Who got into the most trouble growing up?
John – Trouble ? We were angels.
Steve – Evenly shared – we all had our moments.
Pete – Not me, I’m perfect Peter.

6. What does it mean to be Green:
Steve – Great club, great people & great heritage. I am forever in debt to “Ronald Carlton Rose” for encouraging me to play for the Greens in 1967.
John – I loved all sport but particularly rugby but the Club means much more than that to me. My career took me away for large chunks of time over the years and the Greens became my constant source of connection to home. It’s like being part of a very big extended family and I really value that. Now at my stage it’s invigorating to interact with the whole spectrum of the Greens family from young to old and everyone in between. I want to see the Club thrive in the future to provide all that for the generations to come.
Pete – It has always been an honour to be part of such a strong sporting club which has outstanding comraderie and traditions. Being part of the Merewether sporting community with all the friendships formed over five decades has been a huge part of my life.

7. Favourite Green memory
Steve – Making the finals in 1967 & anytime we beat Wanderers or Uni
Pete – Too many to mention, but Grand Finals wins are always great. After game drinks in the greenroom are pretty hard to beat. Watching my sons, grandsons and granddaughters put on green jerseys is a highlight.
John – There really are heaps but two from the 60’s stand out:

First, I was part of the South Leagues under 14s team that transferred to the Greens in 1965. Club Legend and 300+ player Charlie Doherty was our coach. He was a sparkie and would pick up the Boys High kids including me from the Hamilton railway station in his panel van. I still remember the 8 of us rolling around in the back on the way to what he called “training” at Empire Park, involving mainly touch, swimming and the odd hand spearing lesson at Bar Beach. We loved Charlie!

Second, in late 1960s the first and only time the 3 of us played first grade together for the Greens on Townson, against Boolaroo I think.( Pete lock, Steve no. 8 and me in the centre). That was the good bit but it ended not so well for Pete. Running in support at some point I can still see him in the open at full pace on the way to the try line and then taking an awkward tackle which did his knee and rugby career. So perhaps a mixed memory rather than a favourite one.

Thanks Steve, Pete and John (and Col) for being good sports and answering my questions. You are part of the Greens DNA and loved by many! Thank you for all you have done for Merewether Carlton. #bleedgreen

Dads and Lads Event 2021

On Sunday 16th May, players, family, friends and others within the community came out of the woodwork to head to Townson on a sunny afternoon to witness some ancient rugby skills on display.

The Dads and Lads match was a fantastic afternoon, and a wonderful chance for dads who have watched countless games of their son’s rugby, to be able to take the field together.

It was great to see the younger guys embrace the event and enjoy the day as well. After a few ‘tough’ games, it was off to the Green Room to share tales of old and new and reminisce of a time when we still had it. The Green Room was alive with excitement and the spirit of rugby was the winner on the day.

Our intention is for this to be an annual event and to be able to welcome new recruits as their young blokes turn 18. Thank you to everyone who was involved in the day, special mention to our sponsors for allowing this day to go forward.

We must express our sympathy to Nick King who unfortunately came off worse for wear on the day. We hope you are doing ok Nick.

Cheers,
Jockie Wilson

A special thank you to Stewart Hazell for coming along and taking these photos that we will hold as great memories of the day!

ROUND 5 VS HAWKS RECAP BY SAM BRIGHT

1s
We travelled to Passmore Oval to take on Hamilton in a top of the table clash, with the Hawthorn Cup also on the line. Two debutants suited up for their first starts. Congratulations to Jack McGregor and Brenton Gibson.

Running with the wind in the first half, we overcame a cagey opening with a strong period of possession and field position. However, we lacked the final pass or lucky bounce we needed to break through for the first score. Hamilton defended resolutely and when the chance came, they crossed to take a 5-0 lead.

The try and a dominant scrum turned the momentum in favour of the Hawks. Tom Newman was yellow carded for repeated scrum infringements and after a sustained period of pressure against 14 men, the Hawks crossed to extend the lead to 12-0. Luke Corrigan made a number of strong 1 on 1 tackles and steals as we hung on until half time, while Lachy Milton was a constant threat with ball in hand.

Some calming instructions were given at the break and the boys came out with renewed confidence. The set piece steadied and with it came an increase in possession for the Greens. This led to a yellow card to the Hamilton centre for repeated infringements. Almost immediately Kos Sykiotis, who was strong in attack and defence all game, finished off a long range backline move sparked by Sam Rouse.

The Greens kept looking to exploit the space created by the yellow card. A great ball from McGregor put Rouse into space out wide, whose back and forth with Skyiotis saw him cross in the corner. Rouse’s conversion from the sideline into the wind saw us take the lead for the first time, 14-12.

The Hawks returned to 15 and buoyed by a vocal home crowd and strong breeze at their back swung momentum back their way. After camping in the Greens’ 22 for some time, their number 8 crashed over beside the posts from a scrum. 19-12 Hawks.

A couple of changes for fresh legs helped the Greens as the never say die attitude surfaced. A period of frustration in attack, including a disallowed try for reasons unclear, a barnstorming Newman made amends for the earlier card. Charging onto the ball from at least 20m (or 50m according to other members of the front rowers union) out, he carried a couple of Hawks defenders over the line. The conversion gave us a 21-19 lead we would never relinquish.

The Hawks had a couple of tough opportunities from penalty goals late on, but were unable to convert. The win saw us take the Hawthorn cup and maintain an unbeaten start to the season. Players player shared between Rouse and Milton.

We still drop to second on the ladder due to Nelson Bay’s bonus point win, although they have not yet had the bye.

2s
It was a new look 2s side due to promotions to 1s, injuries, unavailability and strong form of 3.1s and 3.2s.

The experienced Toby Wait moved to 10 and guided the team strongly. 2s debutants Matt Hickey and Tino Vaihu started strongly in the centres. They combined to see Hickey score first points and take a 5-0 lead.

A strong platform was being laid by the pack. Darcy Christie-Johnston and Rhys Bray were proving a handful for the Hawks in attack and a menace in defence, while other forwards line speed was causing problems for the Hawks who could not maintain much rhythm.

As the half wore on we continued to build pressure and points. A highlight came from Ethan Fowles, who on the end of some sharp interplay between the forwards and backs, got into space from inside the greens 22. A chip and chase and some fancy footwork saw a great finish to an 80m movement which extended the score to 20-0.

Changes were made to keep the legs fresh. By full time Bray and Fowles had doubles and Ryan Hucherko, also strong on debut in 2s, were on the scoresheet. Final score 41-0 to the Greens in what is the largest margin of victory in 2s over Hamilton in some time. A good indication the club has great depth despite the injuries and unavailability.

Sponsors Breakfast 2021

Last week Merewether Carlton kick started the 2021 Season with our Sponsors Breakfast at the Green Room. We welcomed our Senior Club, Junior Club and Greenies Grommet Partners to the Green Room for the first official function of the year with a chance to network with fellow Greens partners.

In addition to a welcome from Club President John Davis, the creation of the Adams-Halter ANZAC Shield was announced which will be contested between Wanderers each year across Senior, Junior and Women’s Teams.

Another exciting announcement was the expansion of the Game Day program for the 2021 Season which will see additional food and beverage options at home games as well as additional entertainment in the form of music and jumping castles for kids.

A Q&A session was also conducted with two of our valued long term sponsors to endeavour to gain a greater understanding of their businesses as well as why they have chosen to Partner with Merewether Carlton Rugby. Jode Roach from Allied Newcastle and Luke Sessions from Sessions Legal, both spoke of their long involvement with the club and the value they see in giving back and contributing to a community organisation like Merewether Carlton.

The morning was finished off with the draw for the 2021 Naming Rights to the Green Room with Muller Partnership replacing Sage Painting for the 2021 Season.
