A few days prior the weather forecast looked ominous but last Saturday turned out to be still, warm and sunny for our Presentation Day under marquees on the site of our old Green Room on Townson Oval.
Mike Rabbitt, Chair of our Merewether Greens Rugby Foundation and our favourite MC came all the way back from Crescent Head to direct traffic. We love your work Rabbs!
The Macquarie Dictionary tells me that an icon is βa person seen by a community as being closest to an admired stereotypeβ. Well, Greens icon Ron Rose was in attendance to make the presentations and single-handedly raised the average standard of dress with his customary style, including jacket and tie and glorious green trousers. It is heart- warming to see our current crop of young players get to know, appreciate and respect Ron for the great Greens man he is.
A presentation is an important day in the life of any sporting Club. Itβs a time to reflect on the season past and to celebrate with your team mates the results of all the effort and commitment that was put in during the year. I think it is fair to say we had a lot to celebrate this season and we did just that.
The various awards are set out below and they are all well deserved. I want to mention one award in particular. John βJockyβ Wilson was awarded Club Person of the Year to enormous applause from the crowd. In a year that was tough for him for other reasons Jock was there as a constant helper across all sorts of things in addition to team management from the start of the pre-season to the last of the rugby. In addition to that he conceived and implemented Dadβs and Ladβs, an event that fits so well with what our Club is all about. And last week he was leading a meeting in the Green Room planning next yearβs event. No doubt this will become an important part of our calendar in the years ahead. Jock, on behalf of the whole Club thank you for your outstanding contribution this year.
In short, we had a very good Presentation Day to conclude a great playing season for the Club. We are very fortunate to have such an impressive group of young men and women players who make me very confident for the future of our great Club.
This day would not have happened as it did without a huge effort from our Club Secretary Luke Tressider who did all the heavy lifting to organise the awards and all the engraved trophies. You would be surprised by the tasks involved to make such a day really work. From all of us, thanks Tress!
