Kick off in the first round of the NHRU competition on 6 April will mark the start of the Club’s 90th season in the Newcastle Rugby Union competition.
Following amalgamation of the Cooks Hill Carlton and Merewether clubs, the new club played its first game on 5 July 1930 against Carrington at Carrington.
The newsclippings below from the Newcastle Herald on the 1st and 7th of July 1930 provide an interesting insight into the history of the club. Featuring fixtures, team line up and an excerpt of a post match recap.
The then new Club wasn’t long in becoming successful, winning six first grade premierships in the 1930’s – 1932-34;1936;1938 and 1939.
The social base of the club was established not long after with the Council approved “Recreation Club” being set up in the original Greenroom in 1936.
The newsclipping below is an interesting Newcastle Herald piece from 19th September 1936 about the official opening of the Merewether Carlton Rugby Club’s Recreation Club.
83 years on from Council approval of the Recreation Club Newcastle Council is building the Club’s new clubroom and gym facility at Townson Oval (more on that later).
