Sponsors Breakfast 2019

This morning we held our annual sponsors breakfast at the impressive offices of PKF. We would like to thank all of our major and minor sponsors for their contributions and continued support of the club year on year.

This year as part of the sponsorship package, sponsors had the chance to win naming rights of the new Clarke Stand. Congratulations goes to Sean Hersee and Sage Painting on winning this sought after prize.

Thank you to Andrew, Jorja and the team at PKF for hosting us this morning and allowing us to use your wonderful space.

What’s Happening With The Colts?

Merewether Carlton Colts 2018

Our only negative of the preseason this year has been the NHRU’s decision to scrap the colts competition due to the lack of numbers.

Many of the colts have been leading the way in the preseason training and we feel for those guys who were hoping to play in the colts competition. However they have all been encouraged to stay in the senior program and we have seen a huge number of them continue to train and will vie for spots through all grades.

In true Greens style, the coaching staff and committee have vowed to do everything to accommodate any player who wants to wear the green jersey and there are several options still on the table to facilitate this.  Watch this space….

Preseason recap and season outlook by Jode Roach

Whilst the local surfers lament the nor’easter, it was a saving grace for the greens as they toiled away through the hot summer pre-season at Empire Park. The squads trained for several weeks in December last year earning their Christmas beers before returning for the preseason program in January.  Adam “Passy” Trypas has had them working tirelessly through the summer months aiming at having the whole club at peak fitness for round one.

The club has seen excellent numbers with a great attitude at training. Our player retention from last year is excellent and we have seen an influx of players both locally and from as far as France wanting to be part of this campaign. The encouraging numbers boosted by an excellent turnout from colts, under 18’s & of course the girls leading the charge.

We are now well and truly into our Rugby Program following the “training camp” day at Gibbs on the 9th March where we had over 70 players attend. We were lucky enough to have everyone’s favourite Gill, “Brad“, up from Sydney to assist with the training. Brad is the current forwards coach for Australian School Boys and has extensive coaching experience at different levels in Sydney.  Rolling out the program for the third year we saw a vast improvement in cohesion and confidence in our players.  A huge shout out to the “old boys” for the spread, the strappers, trainers & physios who were on-hand all day and to Tony at the Burwood who fed and looked after the boys after a long day in the sun.

Our first trial was a bus trip to Bathurst last weekend where we were hosted by the Bathurst Bulldogs, the home club of the legendary Chris “Hollywood” Bennett. This was a great hit out for the boys and all who went enjoyed the country hospitality. Trent Considine who wasn’t on the bus took the opportunity to do a lap of the famous Mount Panorama track. He looked extremely comfortable behind the wheel of his dads Audi around the infamous bends.

This week we host Maitland in our last and only local trial in all grades at Gibbs. Having lost to Maitland in the 1st grade final last year, our guys will want to make their presence felt and we are expecting this to be a great hit out and a good benchmark for us to make final team selections going into round 1. We encourage supporters to come along!

As we approach our first game away against Southern Beaches on the 6th April we are confident in the ability and attitudes of the playing group to ensure a very successful season. Following the defeat in last years final, our expectation will be none less than a Grand Final and premiership in 1st Grade and given the depth of talent we will be pushing very hard to claim the Club Championship in what promises to be a very special season with the redevelopment of Townson Oval.

We have four away games straight before the inaugural match out of the refurbished Clark Stand and new Green Room against Singleton on the 11th of May. This is building to be an auspicious occasion with what we are hoping is an unprecedented crowd.

We are extremely excited about the season ahead and look forward to and appreciate your support in what builds to be a very special year in our club’s history!

Go the Greens!

Inaugural Race Day

The Club’s 2019 Social Calendar kicked off with a bang last month with over 300 very smartly dressed punters turning up for the Club’s inaugural Race Day at Broadmeadow.

Our hosts on the day, Gareth Wasik and Justin Lees from Pony Boys gave us a few tips and a lot of laughs! We heard from the amazing coaching threesome of Roach, Gill and Considine and then set the dancefloor on fire late into the afternoon.

Thanks to our major sponsor Allied Pickfords Newcastle for helping us put on a brilliant day. Thanks also to Sanbah, Drift Diner and The Burwood Inn for donating raffle prizes on the day and to everyone involved for making the day such a huge success.  And what a success it was! Not only did everyone have a fantastic day, but the club raised a massive $15,000!

Special thanks also to our (sadly outgoing) social committee of Kate Streatfield, Alicia Frost and Tom Wasley for a very well organised and fabulous event!

Meet The New Owners Of The Burwood Inn

One of our long-time major sponsors, The Burwood Inn (affectionately known as The Zoo of course), recently changed hands and we were keen to get to know the new faces behind this wonderful establishment.

John Palmieri (pictured right) is the Burwood’s proud new owner. Newcastle born and bred AND former Greens player (in the 70’s and 80’s), John has a strong connection to the Merewether community and is pleased to be continuing the Burwood’s major sponsorship of the club. Look out for John donning the green at our games this year.

Sandra and Tony Dart (pictured left) are the new publicans of the Burwood. Originally from the Northern Rivers of Grafton, the Dart’s have a massive 38 years on the board in the pub game! With 25 years in the Newcastle / Hunter Valley region including stints at Greta, Bradford (Maitland) and more recently Wallsend.

Pub Philosophy: always remain heavily involved in the local community and especially through sport. They are very excited to be supporting the Greens along with other strong sporting clubs such as the Merewether Women’s Soccer Club.

Thursday nights will remain $15 snitty and a beer night for all greens members, which is a great chance to show support outside the weekends.

For more information on other specials and whats on at the Burwood, visit the Burwoods website.

We look forward to seeing John, Sandra and Tony during the 2019 season!
