2019 Looking Bright For Our Women’s Team

The girls opened round one on 13 April with a HUGE victory over Medowie winning 82-12.

This season is looking bigger and brighter with the women’s competition increasing from 4 teams to 6 teams – Greens, Waratah, Medowie, Hamilton, Maitland, and University and Mayfield East combining to form a new side Easts-University.

Some sad news for our arch-rivals Wanderers not entering a team this season, this will be the first season since the inception of the women’s comp where the two blues have not entered a team. Their demise has seen us reap the benefits of player recruiting to further strengthen the ranks.

The girls have a new coach on board, Steve Robson who in the offseason married our superstar prop Melissa Robson (nee Whittingham). Congratulations Mel and Steve!!! A further congratulations to the happy couple who have a baby on the way, due in July. This pair do not muck around!!

Preseason 7s
The season began for the girls a bit early this year with a pre-season 7s competition run by the HRWU which kicked off in February and went for 8 weeks. The competition had a few of our girls running around and getting rid of the cobwebs early, our team finished in 4th place overall. The competition was a bit of fun for all involved. In the true spirit of rugby, struggling for numbers saw our girls play for Maitland & Easts as well as girls from both of these sides pulling on a Greens jersey when needed.

We celebrated International Women’s Day with all of the HWRU 7s competition participants.

A few of our senior players stepped into coaching roles with our junior girls sides who also did a great job in the comp, the future of the greens women’s side is looking bright.

The girls are scheduled to take on Maitland on Saturday 27 April at Marcelin Park kick off 4.30pm.
