Affectionately known as “The Greens”, Merewether Carlton is the most successful club in the Newcastle competition. The club was formed in 1930 from the amalgamation of Cooks Hill Carlton and Cooks Hill Surf Club. Cooks Hill Carlton was established in 1887, making it one of the oldest clubs in Australia.
The club won six 1st Grade Premierships between 1930 and 1940 and nineteen first XV Grade Premierships to date – the last being in the 2024 season.
The club has been Club Champions on nineteen occasions in its long history, a record that no other club has surpassed. This includes being club champions in seven consecutive seasons from 2005 to 2011.
The club proudly fills the maximum number of teams possible in the Newcastle Competition comprising of five senior grades, a colts and a women’s side. The club boasts approximately 200 senior and well over 200 junior registered players.

Last week, our players voted on our Club Captains for the 2025 season. This is a very important role for the Greens and we’ve had some club legends fill these important positions over the last 50 years since its inception in 1975. It is a direct role between the Players to the Board with voting rights on our clubs direction involved.
Life Member, Steve “Slicer” Frost was our first Club Captain in 1975 & we’ve had 22 men & women cover this role since. Paul Hughes & Mick Williams both hold the record of 5 years each through 2000 to 2010.
In 2024 our Constitution was changed and we added a second Club Captain each year to share the load in a growing position.
We’re delighted to announce that Jack Mackay & Naomi Medlin are our Club Captains for the 2025 season.
Naomi is back for her second year after partnering Jock Wait in 2024 & Jack has stepped into this role with energy to burn & a Social calendar to fill.
Both Jack & Naomi are looking forward to the challenge & have some great concepts to deliver this year. They’ll focus on bringing the enjoyment back into the club whilst ensuring our club is being great role models for our Jnrs and community.
