Our Season So Far – Mick Gill
The opening round saw all grades unbeaten with comfortable wins against Southern Beaches. We showed great maturity with our attitude and relentless pressure with and without the football which lead to a comfortable 87-0 victory.
While 2nd round saw us have to work harder against tough uncompromising Nelson Bay sides. We were punished for every mistake and lack of pressure applied to the bay side with every attacking opportunity on the bays try line the we would continually come up with unforced errors.
A 15 minute period before half time saw us pile on 17 points. The Greens couldnโt match The Bay’s 2nd half energy with the bay skipping out to a 27-24 lead with 3 minutes to go.
We took a penalty goal in front to draw it all up with the coaching staff more than
relieved with taking home 3 points from the draw at the Groperdome.
With only a minute left Bay kicked off, an early line break saw the Greens get within Sam Brights kicking range and we were able to squeeze a penalty from 52m out with final siren blown. Brighty found enough height and length for the ball to sail just over the crossbar to see us walk away with the victory.
As coaches we feel that there is a lot of work in front of us but good sides will always find a way to win even on the off days which is what happened at the Bay.
One thing that has stood out and has contributed to the early round wins is our fitness and ability to stick to the basics of the game plan as we continue to evolve as the season progresses. 1st Grade has shown great signs early and learnt some great lessons in opening rounds.
This weekend sees us travel to Marcellan Oval which is traditionally a great day of tough running rugby and hospitality from the Blacks.
All grade games will be crucial to getting early breathing space in the top 5 for a few weeks with both clubs usually showing great representation in September.
1st Grade is looking to be another great clash with the standard of football high after a couple years of crucial semi final clashes.
Forwards will be where itโs won and with the backs looking for a strong defence performance out wide.
The other growing anticipation is the 1st season home game against Singleton in the coming weeks.
Driving past Townson on a weekly basis and seeing it all go up just adds to excitement. The club is looking forward to setting standards and culture which will see this clubhouse share its same characteristics with the old Green Room and continue the great meeting place that is the GREEN ROOM.
